Why are you serving on the Faculty Advisory Committee?
“As an immigrant that came from Peru 32 years ago, I did not speak a word of English and my first job in Iowa was as a dishwasher at the local Holiday Inn hotel in Des Moines; I have faced diversity issues in many ways. I speak with a Spanish accent that could be portrayed as ‘he is not smart enough’ and I have spoken to thousands of students across the US who have experienced similar issues. In the workplace, people may feel that there is nothing in common with someone from another ethnic group, culture or different language -- wrong. Everyone can play a role on making the education environment more inclusive and welcoming...I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience to GWI.”
