NACAC, ACT, College Board, Common App, and IB Join International ACAC Presidents in Encouraging Support for Those Impacted by the Coronavirus Outbreak

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) joins the International ACAC presidents in encouraging members to be mindful of the impacts of the Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) outbreak on students, families, staff, and colleagues and to take action where necessary.

School closures, the cancellation of scheduled standardized test dates (currently ACT, TOEFL, and IELTS February test dates), the postponement of college fairs and college visits, and limitations on travel may affect students in the college admission cycle, the counselors who support them, and admission officers who may be traveling to meet with prospective students.   

NACAC encourages flexibility with admission deadlines that may be impacted by this situation. Open communication between counselors and admission officers about any disruptions and possible accommodations is encouraged.

Note that some schools may be closed, limiting access and communication. Discussing ways to support admission and recruitment staff who may live in affected areas or face impacted spring recruitment travel is advised. Counselors and admission professionals may also consider contributing to campus conversations about supporting international students who may need to remain on campus during upcoming breaks.

NACAC association colleagues also urged flexibility for students, families, and counselors in the affected areas and offered updates on their respective programs and services.

ACT

Due to the recent government-ordered school closures related to the coronavirus outbreak, ACT has decided to cancel the Chinese administration of the ACT that was scheduled for Feb. 7 and 8. This decision was made out of concern for the safety of students and testing staff and to comply with instructions from the Chinese government.

ACT will reschedule your students’ registration to the next administration, scheduled to occur April 3 and 4, at no cost to them. If they do not wish to take the ACT, they may receive a refund of the February registration fee. Students who paid the registration fee with a voucher are not eligible to receive a refund. Students are being instructed to contact ACT Customer Care before the regular registration deadline of the April testing administration, March 13, if they are requesting a refund or a different test date.

College Board

In accordance with the guidance issued by international health organizations and evolving travel restrictions, College Board has canceled the registrations of students testing in China and students who appear to be traveling from China to take the March SAT. The College Board is refunding all registration fees. The next international SAT administrations are May 2 and Aug. 29.

Students who are currently located outside China and believe their registration was canceled in error may be able to reinstate their registrations by contacting Customer Service by Feb. 24. Customer Service hours are 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. ET, Monday—Friday.

Common App

Common App has reached out to its 900+ member institutions to echo NACAC's calls for flexibility and to remind them of the tools they have available to support students and schools. They also maintain an FAQ for students impacted by natural disasters and community disruptions such as this one.

International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate is monitoring the situation carefully and have been communicating regularly with the schools and educators impacted by the outbreak to provide the support needed. They have put in place a range of processes to mitigate, where possible, the impact such as extending eCoursework deadlines and allowing the use of video calls for student presentations. The IB has established a working group comprised of senior staff who will meet regularly to monitor new information from appropriate government agencies and to listen to the IB World Schools community. They are also updating ministries of education and universities regularly with the understanding that this is an unexpected and unprecedented situation which requires us all to make balanced judgements.
